Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the entire world by storm and some populations are more vulnerable to this virus than others. One of the most vulnerable populations is seniors and those who live with chronic medical conditions are even more vulnerable. For this reason, many seniors have had to isolate and confine themselves to their rooms for an extended period of time. Now that the virus is better controlled, there is an opportunity for seniors to leave their rooms and resume some form of regular life once again; however, this virus is still among us and there is no vaccine available as of yet. Therefore, it is important for everyone in a senior living community to make sure they deconfine in the right way. There are a few important tips to keep in mind.

Why It Is Time to Deconfine for Seniors

The relaxation of the measures that have been put into place has been discussed because it is having an impact on the mental health of seniors. While it is important to protect the physical health or seniors and those who live near them, this physical health must not come at the expense of mental health. The impact of confinement and social isolation on seniors has been profound. There are a number of impacts that this isolation is starting to have.

One of the biggest is the loss of social ties. Many seniors depend on their famiyl members and friends for social outings. The inability to socialize can be stressful. This comes in addition to the stress that has already been created by COVID-19. This leads to fear and anxiety, as seniors feel like there is an enemy around them that they cannot see. Furthermore, many seniors have had to give up many of the activities they have come to know and love. This could include yoga, swimming, games, and simply enjoying meals around others. Without this form of stimulation, this could lead to brain atrophy. Furthermore, many seniors have been unable to stay in shape. This could increase the risk of falls, which might lead to serious complications.

Now that social isolation, starting to end, it is important for everyone to come out and socialize safely. There are a few conditions that must be met to stay safe.

Coming Out Safely for Seniors

While social isolation is ending, it is important to do this safely. There are a few tips that seniors, and everyone, has to remember. First, it is critical to wear a face covering. This is a mask that has been designed to protect not only the wearer but also those around them. Make sure this mask is worn whenever someone else is in the physical vicinity.

Furthermore, hand washing is always recommended. Ideally, hand washing would be done whenever you come into contact with another surface that could have been touched with someone else; however, at a minimum, hand washing must be done when you leave the residence and when you return in addition to the other times when you regularly wash your hands (such as prior to meals and using the bathroom).

Finally, you also need to make sure that you follow social distancing guidelines. Aside from those who live in your home with you, you need to make sure that you remain at least two meters away from other people. This makes it harder for the virus to spread. These are critical conditions that will help you stay safe as this period of social isolation comes to a close.
